Pixie Ice Cream

IMG_6710-1.jpg

As we recently noted, this town has a serious deficit of homemade ice cream. Other than a chain or a local place that uses mass-produced ice cream, if you want to go out for ice cream, we know of only one option: Lichita’s.  We do love Lichita’s, and as we recently told you, it will be in the Pizitz building. And after my original post, several readers pointed out that Big Spoon is a fantastic small batch ice cream operation with a pop-up schedule that can be found here.  But in a city of this size, I’m confident we can...

Hero Doughnuts

IMG_6627-0.jpg

2015-2016 has been a big year for doughnuts in Birmingham. For example, the introduction of a truly spectacular (and Birmingham’s first) cake doughnut with We Have Doughnuts. We are *huge* fans. However much we love WHD (and believe me we do, I have a love handle dedicated to WHD), this town is big enough for more than one amazing doughnut place. Given the appetite Birminghamsters seem to have for the familiar elevated to a higher level (like Post Office Pies with pizza, or Revelator with artisanal toast), I think we can handle 2, 3, or 4 amazing doughnut places. Last...

Ethiopian food in the Pizitz building and other mindblowing things

IMG_6589-0.jpg

If someone had to spill the beans about our most heavily guarded Pizitz secret, I’m glad it was Eater. First, some background: Eater is a food blog that writes about food in big cities (e.g., Eater NY), and important food things happening all over the US. It has 11 million daily readers-it’s kind of a big deal. We are HUGE Eater fans. For a food blogger, interacting with Eater in any way is like getting to share breathing space with a celebrity. When I met one of the Eater writers at last year’s Food Media South conference, it was like...

Fancy’s on Fifth

IMG_6558-0.jpg

It’s never a good idea to base a blog post on an opening night experience. But for Fancy’s on Fifth, we’ll make an exception. Earlier today, Mr Foodie forwarded me an al.com article about Fancy’s at exactly the same time as our trusted foodie friend Michelle (of Urban Pops post fame) texted me asking about when we should go try it. The only correct answer: tonight. We were lucky enough to be able to get there around 5:30p. It was already packed; we grabbed the very last table. We noticed these cool round booths made of wood that seat larger...

Woodlawn Cycle Cafe

IMG_6301-0.jpg

For the past several months, Mr. Foodie and I have been hearing about a “cycle cafe” opening in Woodlawn.  Then, in January, some very promising photos began to appear on our friends’ Facebook feeds.  We needed to get over there STAT to see for ourselves. As you well know, food options for Sunday brunchtime are relatively limited in this town.  So one lazy Sunday morning at 11:30am, with a nearly-empty fridge (pre-Trader Joe’s run of the weekend), we wracked our brains.  Where to eat?  We really weren’t in the mood for a greasy, heavy, or fried meal, so that limited our options...
